Benin Leader Describes Current Situation as “Totally Under Control”
Speaking to the nation through a state broadcaster, the West African leader revisited the events in which a “small group of soldiers… started a mutiny to attack republican institutions and destabilize the nation by challenging the democratic order.”
He emphasized that, in his capacity as president and supreme commander of the armed forces, he had enacted all essential actions to protect the nation’s stability.
Talon expressed gratitude to the military personnel who stayed “republican and loyal to the country,” promising that this effort to overthrow the government “will not go unpunished.”
Earlier that same day, a faction of Beninese soldiers had told the state broadcaster that they had deposed President Talon and installed Lt. Col. Pascal Tigri as head of a new “Military Committee for Refoundation.”
However, Interior Minister Alassane Seidou stated on national television that the coup attempt by “a small group of soldiers” had been thwarted and encouraged citizens to continue with their everyday affairs.
Defense and security units are currently searching for Tigri, according to a local news outlet.
This failed uprising comes in the wake of the military coup in Guinea-Bissau in late November, which brought Gen. Horta Inta-A to power as transitional president.
